Hellblazer (2019-) #5

Rating: 4.5 out of 5.

It must be said I’m enjoying this book. I’m glad DC is allowing it Black Label status, although Vertigo once fulfilled that function more than adequately. The lighter tone, punctuated by Matias Bergara’s often cartoony art, is a delight – for all the very British black comedy from the interaction between John and Tommy (and the sexualised undertones), there’s no question the plot against Constantine underneath is pitch black. It’s a fun, accessible read, and thankfully once again written by a Brit. Si Spurrier is very clear who John is and what is rightful role in the DC Universe should be – welcome back Hellblazer.
