Comics

John Constantine: Hellblazer #9 ★★★★★

Si Spurrier’s incisive look at the royal family is no less brutal than his look at English racism and Brexity fishermen. Matias Bergara’s art is both witty and horrific in equal measure. Continue reading John Constantine: Hellblazer #9 ★★★★★

Film

Venom ★★½

A seriously undemanding muddle of a film, despite a superstar cast. A property with such much potential deserves far more than this bland script. Continue reading Venom ★★½

Dceased: Dead Planet #2 ★★★★★

The horror increases, but all isn’t what it seems. Talk about a cure really resonates in the Covid-19 era, and Taylor and Hairsine complement one another better than ever. Continue reading Dceased: Dead Planet #2 ★★★★★

Darius the Great is Not Okay ★★★★★

Probably the loveliest book I’ve ever read. Adib Khorram walks me through my head and my heart in this coming-of-age tale. Framing his celebration of diversity with Star Trek: TNG is both clever and cute. Darius is adorable, the book is smart and made me cry. Continue reading Darius the Great is Not Okay ★★★★★

Radioactive ★★★½

Strong performances but even Rosamund Pike can’t focus a wildly uneven script that doesn’t quite deliver the biopic Marie Curie deserves. Continue reading Radioactive ★★★½

Bill Sienkiewicz and Moon Knight: A Quick Retrospective

A quick look back at my introduction to Bill Sienkiewicz’s art via Moon Knight. When he transcended himself after the first year he affected my storytelling tastes forever. Continue reading Bill Sienkiewicz and Moon Knight: A Quick Retrospective

John Constantine: Hellblazer #8 ★★★★★

The siren’s story comes to a gruesome conclusion, with some bleak Constantine wisdom about love and magic. Comics storytelling this good only happens once or twice a generation and it’s just beautiful. Continue reading John Constantine: Hellblazer #8 ★★★★★

The Dreaming: Waking Hours #1 ★★★★

A clever look at diversity, switching between the real world and the Dreaming, but neither Lindy nor Ruin’s stories have taken off yet. Continue reading The Dreaming: Waking Hours #1 ★★★★

Duck and Dive (Rise and Shine Book 1) ★★★★

GB Ralph’s YA novella about 25 year old Arthur’s misadventures coming out has plenty of heart, great dialogue and a hunky potential love interest. It’s fun and I want more! Continue reading Duck and Dive (Rise and Shine Book 1) ★★★★
